Paraguayan President Santiago Pena announced a national public holiday on Tuesday to celebrate their historic victory over Germany in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In the 32nd round of the World Cup, Paraguay defeated the four-time world champion Germany in penalties with 4 goals to 3 and advanced to the quarter finals.
The Round of 32 match played at Boston Stadium was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and extra time, but then Paraguay pulled off one of the biggest defeats in World Cup history in a penalty shootout.
President Santiago Pena also shared his photo of signing the official decree declaring the holiday on social media site X.
In the decree issued by the President, it was said that this victory against Germany is not only limited to sports, but also has national importance, so the government cannot remain silent in the face of this great victory.

Note that Paraguay will now face the winner of the France-Sweden match on July 4 in Philadelphia in the quarter-finals.
