Argentina’s national team could face disciplinary action from FIFA following their World Cup semi-final win over England.

At the end of the match, the Argentinian players raised a banner in celebration that read ‘Las Malvinas son Argentinas’, which means ‘The Falkland Islands are Argentina’.

The Falkland Islands are a British territory, but Argentina has owned them for a long time.

In 1982, a war broke out between the two countries on the same islands and hundreds of soldiers lost their lives.

FIFA previously fined Argentina’s Football Association for displaying a similar banner in 2014, as the world body’s rules prohibit political messages on the field of play.

On the other hand, Vice President of Argentina Victoria Villarreal also supported the banner “Falkland belongs to Argentina” on social media and this is not just a football match.

Before the match, he took a tough stance.

On the contrary, Argentina’s head coach Lionel Scaloni made it clear that football and politics should not mix.

According to him, the previous war is a sad fact but the focus on the field should be only on the game.

It is worth mentioning that in the semi-final, Argentina defeated England 1-2 after an emotional match and reached the final.
