Women’s World Cup 2026: English storms, Sri Lanka badly beaten

Birmingham: The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 began with a brilliant and one-sided display by hosts England, as the English team defeated Sri Lanka by 87 runs to make a winning start.

In the opening match played in Birmingham, the England batsmen played aggressively and scored a mountain of runs, in response the Sri Lankan team could not put up enough resistance in pursuit of the desired target.

Sri Lankan Cricket Team captain Chamari Athapathu won and decided to bowl first, in reply the English women’s team scored 219 runs for the loss of one wicket.

On behalf of the English team, opening batsman Amy Jones scored 53 runs, while Danny White and captain Nate Burnt remained unbeaten on 105 and 46 respectively.

Chasing the target, the Sri Lankan team could manage only 132 runs in 20 overs. Nilakshika was the leading batsman for Sri Lanka women’s team with 39 runs.

Three exciting matches are scheduled today in the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, where teams from different groups will compete for crucial points.

In the first match of the day, the teams of Ireland and Scotland in Group 2 will face each other and in the second match, two strong teams of Group One, Australia and South Africa will compete and the last match of the day will be played between New Zealand and West Indies of Group 2.
