West Indies batsmen Amir Jango and Ruston Chase broke multiple records by forming the biggest sixth-wicket partnership in Test cricket history against Sri Lanka.
The two batsmen put on a magnificent sixth partnership of 401 runs, the highest partnership for any sixth wicket or less in Test cricket.
The previous record was held by England’s Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes, who added 399 runs for the sixth wicket against South Africa in 2016.
Amir Jango and Ruston Chase also became only the second pair in history to put up a 400-run partnership for the fifth wicket or less in Test cricket. Earlier in 1946, Australia’s Sid Barnes and Don Bradman had put on a 405-run partnership for the fifth wicket against England.
This is also the second contribution of more than 400 runs by West Indians in Test cricket. Earlier in 1958, Conrad Hunt and Gary Sobers put on a 446-run second partnership against Pakistan, which is still a West Indies record.
It is also only the second time against Sri Lanka that a pair have put on a partnership of over 400 runs in a Test. Earlier in 1991, Martin Crowe and Andrew Jones from New Zealand managed a partnership of 467 runs.
West Indies also posted their highest total in Test history against Sri Lanka with 626 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the first innings. West Indies’ previous best score was 580 runs in the Galle Test in 2010.
It is the first time since December 2013 that the West Indies have scored more than 500 runs in a Test match, while it is also the first time since November 2012 that the team has crossed the 600-run mark.
