The world football organization FIFA made a historic decision and allowed the women’s team consisting of Afghan refugees to participate in international competitions.

The Afghan refugee women’s football team, which was forced to leave its country after the Taliban regime took over 5 years ago, was given the chance to participate in international competitions.

At a meeting in Vancouver, Canada, the FIFA Council approved a change in its rules, recognizing the refugee team playing under the name of the Afghan Women’s League.

FIFA used its powers to register teams in emergency situations and granted the status of the Afghanistan women’s national team to the Afghanistan Women’s United team.

FIFA announces that the Afghan women’s team will play for the first time as an official national team.

Although the team is currently unable to qualify for the Women’s World Cup in Brazil in 2027, it could compete in the qualifiers for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a statement that we are proud of this beautiful journey started by the Afghan Women’s Union.

“With this initiative we aim to enable them and other FIFA member associations, who cannot register a national or representative team for a FIFA competition, to take the next step together with the relevant confederations,” he said.
