Sri Lanka Women’s Team captain Chamari Athapathu has declared defeat as captain after losing a crucial match to West Indies in the T20 Women’s World Cup 2026.

In the match played in Bristol, the Sri Lankan team was bowled out for just 98 runs, in reply West Indies reached their target by 5 wickets with 23 balls to spare.

It is worth noting that this was Sri Lanka’s second defeat in three matches in the tournament and after this the team is placed fifth in Group B.

After the defeat by West Indies, opening batsman Chamari Athaputhu said that despite representing the national team for 18 years, he has never been able to take his team to the semi-finals of the World Cup.

He said that he himself has achieved a lot but as a captain I consider myself a failure because not taking the team to the knockout stage of the World Cup is a big disappointment for a player.

Athapatthu, who scored just two runs in the match against West Indies, regretted her performance, saying that she should have played more responsibly and if she had batted better, Sri Lanka might have won the match.
