Cricket Ireland has appointed former Afghanistan captain Jonathan Trott as a short-term consultant for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan.

According to a statement from Cricket Ireland, Jonathan Trott will join the Ireland men’s team next week and will stay with the team for 14 days to help prepare for the home match against Afghanistan.

Trott will not only guide Ireland’s preparations ahead of the series, but will also provide tactical advice to the team on match days during the first and second ODIs.

Cricket Ireland says Jonathan Trott’s appointment will play an important role in planning the series against Afghanistan as well as preparations for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup qualifiers in early 2027.

Cricket Ireland’s high performance manager Graeme West said adding a world-class coach to the squad is a great opportunity as Jonathan Trott has experience of the Afghanistan team and its tactics.

The five-match ODI between Ireland and Afghanistan will begin on August 5 at Brady.

It is worth mentioning that Jonathan Trott has resigned as the captain of the Afghanistan national team at the end of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Under his coaching, Afghanistan achieved historic achievements, including reaching the semi-finals of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup for the first time.
