The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended Cricket Canada’s funding for six months due to serious governance concerns, dealing a major financial blow to the Canadian Cricket Board. The ICC informed Cricket Canada of the decision this week.
According to media reports, the suspension of funding will not have an immediate impact on national team cricket activities or high performance programs, however, the majority of Cricket Canada’s revenue comes from ICC funding. According to the 2024 financial statements, 63 percent of the board’s total income was from funds provided by the ICC, which is about 3.6 million Canadian dollars.
The ICC has not yet released the full details of these governance issues, but an investigative program published in Canada revealed a lack of financial oversight at Cricket Canada and alleged violations of ICC policies.
Cricket Canada has been embroiled in various controversies for some time now. Recently, the T20 World Cup match between Canada and New Zealand was also investigated by the ICC’s anti-corruption unit, while former head coach Khurram Chouhan is still under investigation after an audio scandal emerged in which allegations of match-fixing and pressure on former board members emerged.
Meanwhile, the Cricket Canada board has already come under fire for the appointment and removal of former president Salman Khan. According to reports, he was charged with failure to disclose previous convictions, while Calgary police also filed fraud and theft charges against him, which he denied.
