Spain beat defending champions Argentina 0-1 in extra time to become world champions for the second time in their history in a thrilling final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
At the beginning of the first half of the final match of the mega event played at the New York Stadium, the Spanish team was left in the shadow.
Spain’s defense was so strong in this half that Argentina couldn’t get a single shot on goal and the match was scoreless at halftime.
It was the same in the second half, Argentina’s Fernandez was sent off by the referee before the end of the game for a foul on a Spanish player, and after that the Argentine team had to play with 10 players for the rest of the time.
The Argentine team could not shoot a single shot at Spain’s goal in this half and the regular time of the game ended without a goal.
The first half of extra time was also goalless, then came the decisive second half of extra time when Spain’s Fern Torres scored an early goal that he did not miss and played a key role in making Spain the number one football team in the world again.
With this victory, under the leadership of coach Luis de la Fuente, Spain won the second FIFA World Cup title in its history, while becoming world champions for the first time since 2010.
The Argentinian players tried hard to score after the defeat but failed and thus the defending champions failed to retain the title as a result of the 1-0 defeat. US President Donald Trump presented the cup to the world soccer champion Spain and awarded the players.
