Hosts Mexico beat Ecuador 0-2 to advance to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup.
The match at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City was delayed for an hour due to heavy rain and lightning, but after the start of the game, the host team put on an impressive performance and kept the pressure on the opponent from the start.
Mexico made several dangerous attacks in the first 10 minutes and soon Julian Quinones fired the ball into the net to give the team the lead.
Moments later, Raul Jimenez converted a mistake by an Ecuadorian defender to double the lead.
After the secession, Ecuador tried to make a comeback, but could not find much success against Mexico’s organized defense strategy.
Gonzalo Plata’s effort was close to the target but failed.
Ecuador’s woes worsened in the closing moments of the match when Piero Hancapay was shown a red card for covering his face while talking to an opponent.
After this win, Mexico will face either England or DR Congo in the next round.
It is worth mentioning that since 1986, this is Mexico’s first victory in the knockout phase of the FIFA World Cup.
