Argentina star Lionel Messi achieved another historic feat in the FIFA World Cup 2026 and became the first footballer in the history of the World Cup to score in 7 consecutive matches.
Messi scored a free goal in the 80th minute of the match against Jordan and not only made Argentina 3-1, but also set a new world record.
With this success, Messi broke the historical record of scoring goals in 6 consecutive World Cup matches held by Frenchman Just Fontaine and Brazilian Jairzinho. Just Fontaine achieved this feat in 1958 and Jairzinho in the 1970 World Cup.
Messi’s goalscoring streak began in the final match against Australia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, after which he scored against the Netherlands, Croatia and France to help Argentina become world champions.
Messi is also in great form in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. After scoring a hat-trick against Algeria and two goals against Austria, he has now also scored against Jordan.
The goal against Jordan took Messi’s World Cup tally to 19, further cementing his record-setting performance.
