Spanish Football League president Javier Tebas has called for the immediate resignation of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, accusing him of destroying the football industry by continuing to expand international competitions.
In an interview with an Italian newspaper, Javier Tebas said: The proposal to increase the number of teams from 48 to 64 teams in the 2030 World Cup makes no sense, the World Cup is an important event, but the whole world of football cannot revolve around it.
He said that Infantino’s time is over but he has the support of the FIFA system and the member federations, so there is no strong candidate against him.
Tebas claimed that many people are against Infantino, but remain silent and are complicit in the damage of football.
The LaLiga boss says the national leagues are the foundation of football but FIFA is only implementing policies for the 40-day World Cup that are hurting the entire football industry, which involves thousands of jobs.
He also criticized the water breaks introduced at the 2026 World Cup and the 27-minute final instead of the traditional 15.
According to the LaLiga president, many stadiums are equipped with modern cooling systems, so the extra intervals are reserved only for advertising and commercial interests.
On the other hand, the South American Football Association has officially proposed the participation of 64 teams in the 2030 World Cup, and this tournament is already being held in 6 host countries and 3 continents.
In the meantime, the representative body of European fans also strongly criticized FIFA and said that the 2026 World Cup was disappointing for the fans.
The organization called for fundamental reforms at FIFA, restoring the role of the Council and Congress in decision-making, and involving clubs, leagues, players and fans in consultation.
According to the organization, expensive tickets, increased travel costs, non-transparent decisions and the prioritization of commercial interests have seriously damaged the reputation of the FIFA World Cup and world football.
It is worth mentioning that Gianni Infantino wants to be the president of FIFA for the fourth time for the period of 2027 to 2031, but the election for this post will be held on March 18 next year in Morocco.
