The impressive victory extended Spain’s unbeaten streak to 38, and broke Italy’s world record of 37 unbeaten matches.
Italy held this record between 2018 and 2021 and defeated England in the Euro 2020 final.
It was Spain’s seventh clean sheet at the World Cup, following their clean sheet against Argentina in the final. Spain became the first team in the world to win the World Cup by conceding just one goal in the entire tournament.

Although Spain lost to Portugal on penalties in the Nations League final, under the rules of football, a penalty shootout is considered a ‘draw’, so their unbeaten record remained intact.
