Report: Feyzan Lakhani. The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has mandated genetic gender testing for female players.
According to the new policy, all players will undergo a genetic test once, this policy will be implemented from Tuesday.
Athletes will be tested for the presence of the SRY gene by taking a swab, blood or saliva sample. Only those players who have not tested positive for the SRY gene will be able to play on the WTA Tour.
According to the WTA, players who test positive will undergo further medical examination, and disciplinary action may be taken against players who refuse the test.
The 2024 eligibility policy was scrapped based on testosterone levels. The new policy aims to ensure fair and equal competition in women’s activities, the association said.
