Legendary West Indian player Sir Garfield Sobers aka Gary Sobers passed away at the age of 89.
The world cricket’s greatest all-rounder was the first player to hit six sixes in first-class cricket, he also held the record for the most individual hits in Test cricket during his tenure.
Sir Gary Sobers is regarded as one of the best all-rounders in the history of cricket. Who was equally adept at bowling fast and spin along with good hitting and was also a brilliant fielder.
He scored the first Test century of his career to add to his historic record of 365 not out while playing against Pakistan in 1958.
This record remained the highest individual score in the history of Test cricket for 36 years, which was later broken by his compatriot Brian Lara.
Not only this, but Sir Gary Sobers is the first batsman in the world to hit 6 sixes in every 6 balls in 1968 while playing for Nottinghamshire.
Sir Gary Sobers represented the West Indies in 93 Tests during his long international career and scored 8,032 runs at an impressive average of 57.78. He also scored 26 centuries during his career. He also took 235 wickets with his magical bowling.
Sir Gary Sobers captained the West Indies cricket team in 39 Test matches between 1965 and 1972 and made the West Indies one of the strongest teams in the world through his aggressive leadership.
In recognition of his outstanding services in the world of cricket, in 1975 the Queen of Great Britain awarded him the honor of ‘Knighthood’.
Apart from this, he was ranked among the top five cricketers of the century in the Wisden Cricketers of the Century.
