SAN FRANCISCO:
In the quarter-final match of the FIFA World Cup, America defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 0-2 and reached the last round of 16.
In the match played in Santa Clara, the American team presented an offensive game from the start and forced Bosnia to adopt a defensive strategy.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino’s team maintained control of the game throughout the match and created many chances.
The USA’s first win came from 24-year-old forward Folarin Balogun, who converted Malik Tillman’s rebound pass to give the team the lead.
But Balogan’s happiness could not last long. The USA played the rest of the match with 10 players after the referee sent him off after a VAR review for a dangerous foul in the second half with Tariq Mohammadirovic.
A player down, the Americans kept up the pressure and Malik Tillman doubled the lead with a stunning free kick in the dying minutes to end any hopes of a Bosnian comeback.
With the win, the USA advanced to the quarterfinals where they will face Belgium on July 6 in Seattle. The winning team will advance to the quarter finals.
