In the quarter-final match of the FIFA World Cup, Belgium defeated Senegal 2-3 and entered the last 16 stage of the competition.
Senegal dominated most of the match and goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Saar led 2-0. It seems that the trip to Belgium will end here.
However, in the final moments of the match, Belgium made a surprising comeback. Romelu Lukaku, who came on at half-time, scored a goal in the 86th minute on Thomas Meunier’s cross, keeping the team’s hopes alive.
Just minutes later, Yuri Telemans headed in Leandro Trossard’s dangerous cross to make it 2-2, sending the match into extra time.
In the extra time, both teams tried for the decisive goal, but in the 125th minute of the match, after VAR evaluation, a penalty was given to Belgium.
The referee gave a penalty decision on Lamine Kamara’s threat, which was strongly protested by the Senegalese players.
Youri Telemans kept his nerves under control and converted the penalty in spectacular fashion to give Belgium a historic 2-3 win.
After this victory, Belgium will face USA or Bosnia and Herzegovina in the finals.
