Hosts Mexico advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after beating Ecuador 0-2.
The start of the match at the Mexico City stadium was delayed an hour due to bad weather, but the visiting team played aggressively from the start and scored the first goal in the 22nd minute.
Ecuador’s frustrations increased in extra time when Piero Hancapay was shown a red card after a nasty clash with Mexico forward Santiago Gammons.
It should be noted that after 40 years, Mexico is advancing to the pre-quarter final stage.
With the win, hosts Mexico are through to the pre-quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of the 32nd leg match between England and DR Congo on July 5 at the Mexico City Stadium.
