It was the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup that the tournament started in a host country that was at war with the participating team.
After the bombing campaign launched by the US and Israel in February, Iran continued to believe that it would be able to participate in the World Cup.
Due to visa problems, the Iranian team had to change the location of their preparations from America to Mexico and 11 support staff could not get permission to enter America.
But despite all the worries and problems, Iran played a great game in their opening match against New Zealand and drew the match 2-2.
A large number of Iranian supporters also supported the team in the match.
New Zealand went ahead in the seventh minute with a joint effort from Chris Wood and Elijah Just. Iran took the lead in the 32nd minute with Reza Rezaian’s goal.
In the second half, Just again welcomed New Zealand, but a header from Mohammad Mohabi pulled Iran back from the deficit once again.
Both teams tried hard to win, but the match ended in a draw.
