The Board of Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering a change in the leadership of the T20 team and according to reports Shreyas Iyer is slated as the future captain.

According to Indian media reports, current T20 captain Surya Kumar Yadav’s continued poor batting form has worried selectors and board officials, after Shreyas Iyer was considered for the captaincy.

According to this report, India under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, achieved great success, including the title of Asia Cup 2025 and ICCT Twenty Cup 2026. He became the third captain after Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma to win the T20 World Cup for India.

However, his individual batting performance has continued to decline over the last two years. Suryakumar Yadav scored 429 runs at an average of 26.81 in 2024 but could only score 218 runs in 21 matches in 2025, his average 13.62 and strike rate dropping to 123.16.

On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer has not only impressed with his batting but also with his leadership skills in the IPL. He led Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings to the IPL final while also winning Kolkata the title in 2024.

Indian reports said that after the end of IPL, India will have to play consecutive white-ball series against Afghanistan, England, Ireland, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, in which case the BCCI may decide to change the leadership sooner or later.
