Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has made a strong prediction for Australia in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, saying the Kangaroos team can reach the semi-finals or beyond.

Speaking to ICC Review host Sanjana Ganesan ahead of the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka starting on February 7, Ricky Ponting said that if you look at the team, Australia look strong against any team.

According to Ricky Ponting, India are the favorites for the event due to the host conditions, available talent and a strong squad, but Australia cannot be overlooked either.

He also said: There have been small changes in the Australian team, but it is not a big change, there are still many experienced players, but the injury of several players is a source of concern for the team.

It is worth remembering that in the 2024 T20 World Cup, which was played in America and West Indies, Australia was out of the competition after losing to Afghanistan and India in the Super Eights stage, but this time the team is determined to enter the field with full preparation.

The biggest omission from Australia’s squad this time around is fast bowler Pat Cummins who could not fully recover from a back injury, with left-arm fast bowler Ben Dvarshus replacing him in the squad.

Ricky Ponting said Australia’s real strength was its all-rounders, including Marcus Stoins, Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green and youngster Cooper Connolly, who was recently named the Big Bash Player of the Year for the second year in a row.

Australia will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on February 11. Australia have been drawn in Group B alongside Ireland, Oman, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
