Former Australian winger Damien Martin is being treated for meningitis in a Queensland hospital.

Damien Martin, 54, was suddenly taken to hospital on Boxing Day and is now in a coma.

Close friend and former defender-batsman Adam Gilchrist says Damien Martin is receiving excellent treatment in hospital.

Former cricketers and fellow players took to social media to express their best wishes and prayers for Damien Martin.

Damien Martin is considered one of the best batsmen in Australia. He played 67 Test matches for Australia from 1992 to 2006.

He retired from Test cricket during the 2006 Ashes series. In his Test career, he scored 4406 runs at an average of 46.37, including 13 centuries.

Damien Martin scored 5346 runs in 208 ODIs at an average of 40.80, including five centuries.

Remember that Damien Martin was also part of the Australian team that won the 2003 ODI World Cup. In the final against India, he scored an unbeaten 88 runs and formed a partnership of 234 runs with captain Ricky Ponting.
