After winning the T20 World Cup 2026 in India, a political and social debate started about keeping the trophy in a temple, with Trinamool Congress MP and former Indian cricketer Kirti Azad questioning the move.
In his statement on the social media platform X, Kirti Azad said that it is not true that the World Cup trophy should be associated with only one religion.
He questioned why the trophy was not taken to a mosque, church or gurudwara. This trophy belongs to one billion and forty billion Indians who belong to different religions, so it cannot be called the victory of one religion.
Kirti Azad asked that the winning team represented India, not Surya Kumar and Jaishah, when Mohammed Siraj could not take the trophy to the mosque, Sanju Samspan did not take the trophy to the church, why the trophy was taken to the temple, this trophy belongs to 140 billion Indians and does not belong to any religion.
Kirti Azad recalled that when India won the World Cup in 1983, there were Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Christian cricketers in the team and they brought the trophy to India.
It is worth recalling that the ICCT World Twenty20 final was played in Ahmedabad where New Zealand won and decided to bowl first, in which the Indian team lost 255 runs for 5 wickets.
