T20 World Cup 2026: Ice begins to melt on Bangladesh not going to India

As the ice over Bangladesh’s inclusion in the 2026 T20 World Cup cricket tournament began, the possibility of shifting Bangladesh to a different group was mooted to ease the problem with logistical adjustments.

According to the information received, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) held a meeting on Saturday in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and discussed issues related to Bangladesh’s participation in the 2026 World Cup.

During the discussion, BCB reiterated its formal request to the ICC to shift its team’s matches to Sri Lanka, the board also reiterated the views and concerns of the Bangladesh government regarding the safety and security of the team, Bangladeshi fans, media and other stakeholders.

According to the spokesperson of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, the talks were conducted in a constructive, friendly and professional manner, all parties openly discussed the relevant issues, among other points the possibility of transferring Bangladesh to a different group was discussed to facilitate the matter with minimum logistical adjustments.

A two-member ICC delegation consisting of Gaurav Saxena and Andrew Epgrave, BCB and ICC agreed to continue constructive discussions on the issue.

It is worth mentioning that Bangladesh is placed in Group C of the World Cup, where all the matches are played in India, while Group A and Group B matches are played in Sri Lanka, so it is likely that Bangladesh will be placed in Group A or Group B and the problem will be solved.

In Group A, hosts and world number 1 India, world number 7 Pakistan, USA, Netherlands and Namibia, in Group B world number 2 Australia, co-hosts and world number 4 Sri Lanka, Ireland and Oman, Group C consists of world number 3 England, world number 6 West Indies, world number 9 Nepal and Bangladesh.
