Outgoing Afghanistan cricket team coach Jonathan Trott has given an emotional look at the end of his coaching career, saying he will always remember his time with the team and is now looking forward to new opportunities in the future.

Afghanistan’s journey in the T20 World Cup came to an end on Thursday as the team registered an 82-run win over Canada at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, but failed to reach the Super Eight stage after defeats to New Zealand and South Africa in the opening matches.

It should be noted that this was Trott’s last stint with Afghanistan as head coach. The former England international cricketer coached the Afghan team for over three years and during that time, Afghanistan achieved significant success, including a historic run to the semi-finals of the 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup.

I have had many memories as a player but also as a coach, many unforgettable moments like beating Pakistan in the World Cup for the first time at the same ground in Chennai, beating England, all these unforgettable moments,” Trott said.

He added that the team has proved its mettle by defeating big teams not only in international matches but also in bilateral series, including wins against Pakistan, Bangladesh and South Africa.

Trott believes that Afghanistan will have to develop quality fast bowlers to become stronger at the world level so that they can reduce their reliance on spinners Rashid Khan and Mujeebur Rahman.

He said that if we want to be successful in different conditions like the 2027 World Cup, we need to develop durable equipment, so that the team can compete in all conditions around the world.

As for the future, the 44-year-old Trott said he wants to rest for now and will enjoy the rest of the World Cup. He admitted that he dreams of coaching the England team, but is currently undecided on a new position.

He said I enjoyed my time here, there were ups and downs, but the memories were good. Now let’s see what the future brings.
