England’s star batsman Joe Root has joined Australia’s Ricky Ponting for third place in the list of most centuries scored in Test cricket.

Root completed his 41st century on the second day of the Sydney Test. Root started not out on 72 after the first day’s play ended early and continued with his confidence.

Former Australian batsman Ricky Ponting scored 41 centuries in 168 Test matches while Joe Root achieved the feat in 163 Test matches.

It should be noted that this is Root’s second century in the current tour of Australia, while he previously failed to score a century in 14 Test matches played in Australia.

India’s Sachin Tendulkar is first in Test cricket with 51 centuries, South Africa’s Jacques Kallis is second with 45 centuries and Ricky Ponting is third.

It is worth mentioning that Australia won the Ashes series consisting of five Test matches, but the fourth Test match played in Melbourne was won by England by 4 wickets.

The fifth Test of the Ashes series took place in Sydney where England won the toss and elected to bat first, scoring 384 runs in their first innings.
