The four-time world champion Italy failed to participate in the FIFA World Cup again.

With this defeat, Italy became the first former champion team in history not to participate in three consecutive World Cup tournaments.
Moses Kane started for Italy in the match, but defender Alessandro Bastoni was shown a red card before the end of the first half and the team had to play with 10 men.
In the 79th minute, Bosnian substitute Haras Tabaković scored a goal and the match was tied.
Both teams failed to score in extra time, after which the decision went to penalties where two Italian players missed the target and Bosnia scored the decisive penalty to win.
The defeat added to Italy’s recent string of defeats, as they have previously failed to qualify for two World Cups.
