ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Army’s Mohammad Asif on Tuesday broke the national pole vault record, clearing a height of 4.95 meters to win gold at the national athletics championship.

Asif’s jump saw him break the previous record by a razor-thin margin – 1 centimeter – beating Jaffar Ashraf’s effort in the previous edition of the event at Attock.

This was one of two national records broken that day, the other being the 110m hurdles, although the athlete’s name was not mentioned in the official press release.

The new time was 13.70 seconds, bettering the previous record of 13.85 set by Mohsin Ali in 2012.

The President and Secretary of Pakistan Athletics Federation could not be contacted for further details of this event.

According to an AFP press release, it was the second day of the championships with a total of 18 events organized.
